Sound Shields

In my experience and research sound shields are generally used for the wrong reasons. The

shields main purpose is to block the explosion on sound from deafening the the other musicians on stage. The Plexi Glass Shield actually disrupts the natural flow of the sound waves and often times causes a distorted and muddied sound overall. Effective sound shields have a plethora of sound barrier insulation and fully inclose the drums. I do not like this because it highly detracts from the musicianship of the group. More elements have to be added to the stage monitors and frankly it is a little demining being put in a box as a solution. To me this just a way of turning an acoustic instrument into a electric drum set. My solution is formal training. The drummer and all the other musicians need to understand that the drums are a dynamic instument. Not just a drum. This means that the drummer needs to learn to play with true dynamics. A drummer can always play quieter. It is an attitude problem not a loud drum problem. I will continue to add and edit this

as my word become better formulated.

History

Ever since 1988 I've been eyeing the Drums. It started with being able to come home after church every sunday night and running to the garage to listen to John White play the drums.

After a while he would let me on and like any kid I hit everything at once. John W. gave me

his old rogers and I have those shells to this day. I did the whole Band thing from 5th grade

through 11th and played in college as well. I was smart enough to listen to the advice of better drummers and took private drum lessons with a couple of different teachers. My formal training consists of Concert Band, Jazz Band and Orchestra. When it comes to playing in the worship

context I have been playing in churches ever since 1993. It started as hand percussion here

and there and moved into being the full time drummer.
